Welcome back to another Mr. Locksmith review! Today, we’re diving into the Kwikset SmartKey Deadbolt, Model 980. If you’ve ever installed, rekeyed, or had to bypass one of these locks, you know they’ve evolved significantly over the years. In this post, I’ll break down the features, installation process, and security concerns, plus share my hands-on experience with this popular deadbolt.
Buying Experience & First Impressions
During a recent visit to a big-box hardware store, I picked up the Kwikset SmartKey 980. If you’ve been to the lock aisle, you’ve probably seen these deadbolts prominently displayed. They’re marketed as easy-to-install, rekeyable, and secure—but how do they hold up in real-world locksmith applications?
Out of the box, the lock looks solid and well-packaged. However, as any experienced locksmith knows, security is about more than just appearances.
The Evolution of Kwikset SmartKey
Kwikset has been refining its SmartKey technology for years, trying to make it more resistant to picking, bumping, and forced entry. Early generations were infamously easy to bypass—you could open them with a screwdriver, blank key, or even a paperclip.

While I haven’t seen SmartKey mortise cylinders yet, I wouldn’t be surprised if they show up in the future. Stay tuned—I’ll be testing and demonstrating methods to rekey and defeat these locks in future posts and videos.
