Life can be unpredictable, but sometimes, a simple act can make all the difference. Recently, I was called to perform a wellness check—one of those jobs that is always unpredictable but incredibly important.

That day started like any other, with routine locksmith tasks. But on my list was something different: a wellness check for an elderly woman. These calls can be unsettling—you never know what to expect. The goal was simple: to make sure she was safe and offer help if needed.

The day began like any other, with the sun casting a warm glow as I headed out for my daily tasks. But there was one special job on my list that day: a wellness check on an elderly lady, a regular request, but always unpredictable in nature. The purpose was simple yet profound—to ensure she was safe, healthy, and to offer a helping hand if needed.
A Sense of Relief
I was able to open the locked deadbolt and stood back while the RCMP entered the house. She was alive, sitting there with a gentle smile but needed help. It’s always nice when the person you’re checking on is still alive and kicking. This is no small feat; wellness checks often entail the unknown, and the outcome is not guaranteed. The sight of the elderly lady, safe and well, was heartwarming. Despite her frail condition and the help she required, she was present, and that meant everything at that moment. The Local Fire Department was next with oxygen and the Ambulance showed up shortly after.
More Than Just a Job
I did my job, and it was time for me to leave, the task at hand completed. But this wasn’t just checking off an item on a list—it was an invitation to pause and appreciate life’s fragility and resilience. As I stepped out, the beauty of the day mirrored the joy inside me. Such moments serve as a poignant reminder of why we do what we do. It’s more than duty; it’s about connection, community, and caring for one another.

Fortunately, the elderly lady had a lot of help already there and more on the way. It was reassuring to see such a strong network of support, testament to the community spirit often found in these situations. With each wellness check, it’s evident that while someone might be in need, there’s a whole ensemble ready to rally around.
