3D Printing: Creating Schlage Keys with Precision and Ease: Testing 3D Printed Keys: Can They Really Unlock Original Locks? In this video, we explore the efficacy of 3D printed keys by testing them on original locks. The host calibrates key machines by cutting and testing slay keys. He inputs a slay key’s code into a 3D printer to create a plastic replica and then tests its functionality on an original SL lock. Discover whether the 3D printed key can turn the lock just like the original, and stay tuned for further experimentation with more locks. (Source: Terry Whin-Yates)

In the ever-evolving world of technology, 3D printing has emerged as a fascinating bridge between digital designs and the physical world. Among its myriad applications, the creation of functional keys stands as a testimony to its precision and utility. Recently, I embarked on an exciting journey to 3D print a “Schlage key,” and the results were nothing short of impressive.
The Process of Calibration and Testing
Before diving into 3D printing a key, a crucial step involves calibrating the key-cutting machines. I always start by cutting a ‘slay key’ to ensure all my machines are perfectly conditioned – be it code machines or duplicators. The true test of this calibration? Using the key on an original SL lock. Naturally, curiosity led me to wonder what might occur when a 3D printer enters the equation.
From Original to Digital: Designing the 3D Printed Key
To bring this concept to life, I first needed an original lock and key. This key came with a specific direct code, which I used as the blueprint for my digital model. Inputting this code into the 3D printer became the pathway to materializing a key. With the 3D printer set, I initiated the print, engraving the precise key code into the design.
The result? A tangible, plastic key that mirrors its metal counterpart. Examining this 3D printed key alongside the original confirmed the quality – it slid smoothly into the lock.
Testing the Functionality: Unlocking Success
The moment of truth is when the plastic key meets the lock. Holding my breath in anticipation, I inserted it to see if it could withstand the rigors of a functional test. Not only did it fit snugly, but with careful application, it turned effortlessly, engaging the lock mechanism with enough pressure to pull the bolt back.
The ability of the 3D printed key to function right out of the printer, having taken approximately 15 minutes to print at a very deliberate pace, was nothing short of remarkable. Imagine the possibilities of originating a brand-new key from code with such simplicity!
The Future of 3D Printed Keys
While this experiment was a success, it’s merely an entry point into exploring broader horizons. The potential of 3D printing extends beyond just replicating keys; it empowers us to innovate and redefine traditional manufacturing concepts. As I continue to test various locks with 3D printed keys, I am almost certain that this is just the beginning of a revolution in locksmithing and beyond.
3D printing technology offers endless opportunities to innovate and expand the realm of possibilities. Whether it’s for simple day-to-day applications or complex industrial mechanisms, we’re only scratching the surface of what this technology can do. Keep an eye out as we continue to push the boundaries and see where the future of 3D printing takes us! Source: Terry Whin-Yates Mr. Locksmith Linkedin
