The Schlage BE365 Electronic Deadbolt is one of the most popular keypad deadbolts on the market, offering convenience, security, and a sleek design. But here’s something you may not know about this lock—unlike some other electronic deadbolts, the BE365 has no external jump contacts to temporarily power the lock if the batteries go dead. Instead, it comes with a built-in mechanical key override that allows you to unlock it manually.

In this guide, I’ll walk you step-by-step through how to use the key to open a Schlage BE365 if your battery dies, plus a few tips to avoid common mistakes.

Why the Key Override Matters

When your electronic deadbolt runs out of battery power, it’s frustrating to find yourself locked out. With some locks, you’d need a 9V battery to “jump start” the keypad—but the Schlage BE365 skips that altogether. Instead, it includes a physical key so you can always get inside.

This means:

  • No scrambling for a battery.

  • No worrying about weather conditions damaging jump contacts.

  • A simple, reliable backup method.

Step-by-Step: How to Use the Key on a Schlage BE365

  1. Insert the Key

    • Place the key into the keyhole.

    • Turn the key until you feel it depress slightly—this is the lock disengaging.

  2. Turn the Thumbturn

    • Once the key is in the correct position, use the thumbturn on the inside to lock or unlock the door.

  3. Removing the Key

    • Make sure the key is in the upright position before pulling it out.

    • If the key is upside down, it will not come out—this is a common mistake. Simply turn it upright and remove.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Leaving the key upside down – This will make it impossible to remove until it’s upright.

  • Forcing the key – If it doesn’t turn smoothly, you may not have inserted it all the way to the “depress” point.

  • Ignoring battery maintenance – The key override is great, but regularly changing your batteries will keep you from having to use it in the first place.

Pro Locksmith Tip

As a locksmith, I always recommend homeowners keep their BE365 backup key somewhere accessible but secure—not just on the keyring you carry daily. This way, if your batteries die and you’re locked out, you won’t be stuck without the override key.
