How to Rekey Schlage Encode Smart Deadbolt: If you’ve just moved into a new home, lost your keys, or want to make sure no one else has access to your front door, rekeying your Schlage Encode Smart Deadbolt is a smart security upgrade. Unlike traditional deadbolts, the Schlage Encode combines the convenience of keyless entry with the reliability of a standard keyed cylinder, which means you can easily rekey it without replacing the entire lock. How to Rekey Schlage Encode Smart Deadbolt

If you’ve just moved into a new home, lost your keys, or want to make sure no one else has access to your locks, rekeying your Schlage Encode Smart Deadbolt is a smart move. The good news? Rekeying this lock is straightforward and doesn’t require tearing the entire unit apart.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through step-by-step how to safely rekey your Schlage Encode, based on my locksmith training and experience.
Step 1: Disconnect the Power
Before doing anything, remove the battery pack. Disconnecting power ensures you won’t damage the electronics while handling the lock.
One of the great features of the Encode is its clean design—no extra wires dangling around.
Step 2: Remove the Interior Assembly
-
Unscrew the two machine screws on the back of the lock.
-
Carefully set them aside (so you don’t lose them).
-
Gently feed out the data cable—be careful not to tug or crimp it.
At this point, the inside assembly will come off easily.

Step 3: Remove the Cylinder
Unlike older Schlage electronic locks, you don’t need to pull the whole lock apart.
-
Locate the single cylinder-retaining screw.
-
Remove it and slide the cylinder plug out.
👉 Note: The Schlage Encode uses a 5-pin SC1 (C keyway) cylinder. You cannot use a 6-pin plug in this model.
Step 4: Rekey the Cylinder
Now comes the rekeying process:
-
Depress the retainer pin.
-
Unscrew the cylinder cap.
-
Rekey the plug using the new key pins that match your key.
If you’re not familiar with rekeying, I have plenty of rekeying tutorials and videos showing this process step by step.
Step 5: Optional Upgrade
From the factory, the Schlage cylinder is decent, but I like to upgrade to a drill-resistant, pick-resistant cylinder for added security.
This isn’t necessary for everyone, but if you want high-security or want to match your Encode to other locks in your home, this is a great time to do it.
Step 6: Reassemble the Lock
-
Slide the rekeyed (or upgraded) cylinder back in.
-
Tighten the cylinder-retaining screw.
-
Reconnect the data cable carefully, making sure it sits in the recessed channel.
-
Reinstall the two machine screws to secure the inside assembly.
Finally, reinstall the battery pack.
Step 7: Test Your Key
Always double-check:
-
Insert the new key, lock and unlock.
-
Ensure the key can be removed smoothly in both positions.
-
Verify the electronic functions are working correctly.
Everything should feel smooth and secure.

Conclusion
Rekeying your Schlage Encode Smart Deadbolt is a simple process once you know where to start. Whether you’ve moved into a new home, lost a key, or just want extra peace of mind, this quick job ensures your home is secure.
