How to Correctly Hand Your Smart Key Lever Lock
Mr. Locksmith Automotive (604) 259-7617
One of the most common problems I see in the field isn’t a broken lock—it’s an incorrectly handed lock. Far too often, a SmartKey lever lock is installed upside down or simply not handed to match the door swing. This usually isn’t intentional; it’s because the manufacturer instructions are vague at best, and many subcontractors either rush the install or don’t fully understand the process.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through how to correctly hand a SmartKey lever lock so it functions smoothly, looks professional, and avoids future service calls.
Why Handing a SmartKey Lever Lock Matters
SmartKey lever locks—commonly found on Kwikset and Weiser products—are designed to work on both left-hand and right-hand swinging doors. Out of the box, it’s a 50/50 gamble whether the handing will be correct for your door.
If the lever is upside down:
-
It looks unprofessional
-
The lock may not operate smoothly
-
Future servicing becomes more confusing
-
Customers lose confidence in the installation
Correct handing takes only a few minutes once you know how to do it.
Tools You’ll Need
-
3/32″ Allen key (this should be included in the kit, but often isn’t)
-
Small flathead screwdriver
-
A bit of patience (the first time can be tight)
Step-by-Step: How to Hand the Smart Key Lock Correctly
1. Locate the Allen Set Screw
On the side of the lever, you’ll find a recessed set screw. Insert your 3/32″ Allen key until it’s fully seated.
Important:
-
Turn left to loosen
-
The screw is usually very tight the first time—don’t be afraid to give it a firm crack
2. Remove the Lever Handle
Once loosened, pull the lever off. If it sticks, gently push in on the latch while pulling the handle—this often helps free it.
3. Identify the Correct Orientation
Now decide which way the lever needs to face for the door swing. A simple trick I use:
-
Make a small scratch or mark to indicate the new “top” so you don’t lose orientation during reassembly
Inside, you’ll notice a small retaining clip that holds the mechanism in place.
4. Rotate the Mechanism
Using a small flathead screwdriver:
-
Carefully remove the internal piece
-
Rotate it 180 degrees
-
Reinsert it fully
As you turn it, you’ll see a small internal tab moving—this is what locks the handle onto the spindle.
5. Reinstall the Lever
-
Slide the lever back on
-
Make sure it sits flush
-
Tighten the Allen screw snug, not overtightened
Remember: We’re in the business of snug, not stripping threads.
6. Reinstall on the Door
When reinstalling:
-
You’ll notice a half-moon shape in the latch
-
Lightly pushing the latch in makes alignment much easier
If it doesn’t slide in smoothly, don’t force it—minor adjustments usually solve the issue.
Final Thoughts from Mr. Locksmith
Once handed correctly, the SmartKey lever lock:
-
Operates smoothly
-
Looks clean and professional
-
Matches the door swing perfectly
I can’t tell you how many homes I walk into where half the lever locks are upside down. It’s avoidable, and it reflects directly on the quality of the work.
Handing the lock is not complicated:
-
3/32″ Allen key
-
Left to loosen
-
Rotate the mechanism
-
Reinstall and snug it up
That’s it.
