Unboxing and Installing the New Solity GT5BK Wi-Fi Deadbolt

Hi, I’m Terry from Mr. Locksmith. Today, we’re taking a deep dive into a brand-new piece of hardware for me: the Solity GT5BK Smart Deadbolt.

In the world of smart locks, the competition is fierce. We’re going to unbox this, take it apart, install it, and see if it stands up to the high standards we have here at Mr. Locksmith. This is a Wi-Fi-enabled deadbolt that features a digital keypad, app integration, and fingerprint access.

Right out of the box, the first thing I noticed is the weight. It’s a heavy, solid piece of hardware, which is usually a good sign of quality.

What’s in the Box?

  • The Hardware: The unit features a fingerprint scanner, a digital keypad, and—my favorite part—a physical key override. I always tell my customers: Never trust a lock that doesn’t have a manual way to get in if the electronics fail.

  • Weather Protection: It comes with high-quality rubber gaskets. Living in our rainy Pacific Northwest climate, these are essential for protecting the internal electronics from moisture.

  • The “Pet Peeve” Check: They actually included batteries! There’s nothing more annoying than getting ready to install a lock and realizing you have to run to the store for AAs.

  • The Deadbolt: The quality of the bolt itself has improved significantly over earlier models. It’s adjustable for both 2 3/8″ and 2 3/4″ backsets. Remember the “Mickey Mouse” rule—always make sure the “top” of the bolt is facing up!

The Installation Process

I’m installing this on our display door, and I have to say, this was one of the most painless installs I’ve ever done. The manual is well laid out, and the template is perfectly designed for standard North American doors.

  1. Installing the Bolt: It’s a simple twist to adjust the backset. I set it to 2 3/4″ and secured it lightly.

  2. Mounting the Exterior: The rubber gaskets fit snugly. The tailpiece is a “lazy tailpiece” design, and it’s notched so it can only go in one way—the correct way. It even has an “ice pick protector” to prevent bypass attempts.

  3. The Interior Plate: I used my drill on a low torque setting to avoid cross-threading. If you’re a beginner, put the drill away and use a screwdriver! You want to feel the threads to make sure everything is aligned.

  4. Connecting Power: The wiring is straightforward (blue to blue clips). Everything tucked into the housing neatly.

Testing the Security

Once the alkaline batteries were in (I prefer alkalines because they give you a clear warning when they’re dying), I tested the manual override. Both keys worked perfectly. The lock is a 5-pin SC1 keyway, which means it’s easy for us to re-key it to your existing house keys.

The Solity GT5BK also features a built-in alarm. If someone starts beating on the lock or trying to force it, it’s going to argue back with a loud siren. The fingerprint scanner is incredibly fast—the manufacturer claims less than a second, and it definitely feels that way.

Key Technical Specifications & Security Features:

  • Access Methods: Rapid fingerprint recognition (<1 sec), backlit digital keypad, Wi-Fi App integration, and physical key override.

  • Build Quality: Heavy-duty construction featuring a lazy tailpiece and a built-in ice pick protector to prevent common bypass techniques.

  • Weather Resistance: Specialized high-grade rubber gaskets designed for the Pacific Northwest’s rainy climate.

  • Security Logic: Integrated tamper alarm and low-battery alerts for alkaline power systems.

  • Locksmith Friendly: Featuring a standard 5-pin SC1 keyway, making it fully compatible with professional lock rekeying to match your existing house keys.

Why the Solity GT5BK Ranks High for Residential Security:

Unlike many “plastic” smart locks found in big-box stores, the Solity GT5BK offers a robust physical security profile. Its adjustable 2 3/8″ to 2 3/4″ backset ensures compatibility with standard North American doors, while the painless installation process makes it a top recommendation for Vancouver and Surrey homeowners.

The Final Verdict (For Now)

This lock went in like a dream. The hardware quality is impressive, and the physical security features are solid.

The Only Hiccup: I ran into a bit of a delay with the app. Not because of the lock, but because I forgot my Apple Store password and got locked out for an hour! Stay tuned for my next video where I’ll walk you through the app setup, programming the fingerprints, and my favorite part—re-keying the cylinder and testing non-destructive entry methods.
