I get questions all the time “can I Hotwire a Car?” The answer for modern cars is no!

Modern Anti-Theft systems found in cars made after the 90s, most thieves won’t be able to simply Hotwire a modern car and drive away with it. However, some can car be “Hotwired” if the car thieves have Car Programming software comparable to the car dealers of locksmiths. Some cars can be Hot-wired but only run for 30 seconds if at all. Also, Locked steering columns must be bypassed too.

Cars nowadays, most of them, have ignition immobilizers that make hot wiring them much more difficult are using chip keys proximity fobs with computer chips.

“Hotwiring” is where you bypass the ignition lock/switch mechanism and simply join up a series of wires to start the car. The “security” is the ignition lock and nothing else.

However, since the early 90’s in North America cars have had passive immobilizers fitted whereby there is a reader around the ignition barrel that looks for a signal from a chip in the key, no chip, no signal, no start. And its very difficult to bypass if you’ve only got 2 minutes to steal the car, as the lack of signal means the ECU shuts down various parts of the system like power to the sparkplugs, power to the crank sensor, power to the fuel pump.

In conclusion, hotwiring in the conventional sense on modern cars is extremely difficult, however thieves are now stealing modern cars faster than they could the older cars if they have access to Car Dealership of Locksmith Car / Key Programmers.
