The Right Tools for a Safe Job
Using the wrong tools can cause thousands of dollars in damage, so it’s critical to have the right equipment. For most cars today, my go-to kit includes:
- A Jack Tool: This is a small wedge, often inflatable, that lets you create a small gap in the door frame without damaging the window or the weather stripping.
- High-Quality Airbags: These are used to create the initial gap. Most locksmiths carry at least two.
- A Long Reach Tool: This is a long, slender rod that is inserted through the gap to pull on the door handle, press an unlock button, or grab the keys.
- A Button-Pulling Strip: A specialized tool with a piece of sandpaper on the end for added grip, used to pull up on internal door buttons.
This simple, non-destructive kit will help you open the vast majority of modern cars without causing any damage to the electronics, paint, or internal plastic components.
Why You Should Ditch the Slim Jim
When I was a kid, a Slim Jim would open almost any car. Today, it’s an accident waiting to happen. The internal mechanisms of modern cars are filled with complex electronics, wiring, and most importantly, airbags. A modern car can have up to nine airbags inside the door, and using a Slim Jim could trigger one, causing serious damage or injury.
While a few older car models can still be opened with a Slim Jim, it’s a tool that has largely become obsolete for professional locksmiths. The risk of damaging delicate plastic components or deploying an airbag is far too high.
