Bike Lock vs Cordless Grinder
One of the best tools in the locksmith trade is a cordless grinder with a cutting wheel. This tool has saved me countless times, providing quick and efficient solutions for stubborn locks. In this post, I’ll walk you through why I prefer a cordless grinder over a pair of bolt cutters and some safety tips to keep in mind.
Why a Cordless Grinder?
A cordless grinder is my go-to tool because it offers precision and power without the risk associated with bolt cutters. When using bolt cutters, small pieces can fly off, potentially breaking windows or causing injury. With a grinder, you just have to be cautious about the sparks, as they can ruin your shirt and pose hazards if you’re near anything flammable, plastic, or glass.
Safety First
Before using the grinder, always ensure your work is secured with a pair of vise grips. Safety glasses and gloves are a must. Grinder sparks can be dangerous, so aim them downward and away from anything that can catch fire or become damaged.
The Power of Cordless Grinder Batteries
An interesting note: I initially tried using a smaller, more efficient battery with my cordless grinder, but it wasn’t powerful enough. After swapping to a larger battery, the grinder worked perfectly. Though I’ve never had issues with drills and smaller batteries, grinders require more power. Make sure you’re using the compatible battery for your tools to ensure full power and efficiency.
The Process
In this demonstration, I cut off an inexpensive bike lock using my cordless grinder. While I could have picked the lock using special tools, the aim was to showcase how fast and efficient it is to cut it off. It’s essential to note that after cutting, the ends of the lock are hot, so avoid touching themimmediately to prevent burns.
Yes, locks like these can be picked, and it’s not overly difficult. However, from a professional standpoint, time is money. My locksmith services are about getting the job done quickly and effectively, with minimal damage to the property, in this case, the bike. The bike owner might have paid more for the service call than the actual lock, but the bike itself remained unharmed.
