Hi, I’m Terry from Mr. Locksmith! Today, I’m going to show you a very common scenario we encounter in the automotive locksmith world: a broken car key. Nissan keys are actually one of the most popular types of broken car keys we see. Often, the broken piece is stuck in the ignition, creating a real headache for the customer.

However, our customer in today’s example got lucky! The key broke cleanly, and they managed to get the piece out. Crucially, they didn’t try to force it or turn the ignition with the broken piece still inside, which often makes things worse. So, we’ll use this Nissan broken key as our example to show you one way we can get you back on the road.

The Challenge: A Worn, Broken Key

This particular Nissan key broke cleanly, but if you look closely, you can see just how worn it is. It’s so worn that it barely has any “shoulders” left – those flat parts near the head of the key that guide it into the lock. This wear makes traditional duplication a bit tricky.

Method 1: Duplicating from the End (The “Quick & Efficient” Way)

Since the key is so worn and lacks a proper shoulder, we’re going to use a method where we measure and cut from the end of the key. This is a common “quick and dirty” approach that often works well.

  • We carefully measure from the end of the broken key.
  • Using a specialized key cutting machine, we clamp the key precisely.
  • Then, we slowly and carefully cut the new key, taking it down a little bit at a time. This precision is crucial because there isn’t much grip or reference point on the worn key.
  • We then flip it and repeat the process for the other side.

In this case, we were lucky because the key broke cleanly right at its deepest cut, which made the duplication process smoother. The new key is an exact duplicate of the worn, broken one.

When This Method Works (and When It Doesn’t)

This “quick and dirty” duplication method usually works, especially for keys that have broken cleanly. However, sometimes it doesn’t. If the key is too damaged, or if the wear is too extreme, we might need to use a different approach.

For older cars like this one, getting a code from the dealer isn’t always an option. In those cases, we would need to “decipher” the key – measure the depths of the existing key or the lock itself – and then cut a new key precisely on a code machine. We’ll show you how to cut a key by code in a future video, so stay tuned!
