Is your Ford Focus key fob not working properly? If the buttons are unresponsive or the range is reduced, chances are the battery is dead or dying. The good news? Replacing the battery is quick, easy, and can be done at home in just a few minutes.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the step-by-step process to replace the key fob battery on a 2012–2014 Ford Focus.
What You’ll Need 2012–2014 Ford Focus:
-
CR2032 battery (a standard lithium coin cell battery)
-
Flathead screwdriver or a coin

Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Remove the Mechanical Key 2012–2014 Ford Focus
-
Flip the key fob over.
-
Press the small silver button on the back.
-
Pull out the physical key blade (also known as the emergency key).
Step 2: Open the Fob Case
-
With the key blade removed, you’ll see a small notch where the case can be pried open.
-
Insert your flathead screwdriver or coin into the notch.
-
Gently twist until the fob separates into two halves.
Step 3: Remove the Old Battery
-
Locate the CR2032 battery inside.
-
Carefully lift the old battery out using your tool or fingernail.
-
Take note of the battery’s positive (+) orientation — it typically faces up.
Step 4: Insert the New Battery
-
Insert the new CR2032 battery with the + side facing up.
-
Make sure it’s fully seated and flush with the contacts.
Step 5: Reassemble the Key Fob
-
Align the two halves of the fob.
-
Press them together until they click into place.
-
Slide the metal key blade back in until it locks.

Final Step: Test Your Key Fob 2012–2014 Ford Focus
Stand near your Ford Focus and test the lock, unlock, or remote start (if available) functions to ensure the new battery is working properly.
When Should You Replace Your Key Fob Battery 2012–2014 Ford Focus?
Ford key fob batteries typically last 2 to 3 years. If your fob becomes unresponsive or starts working only at close range, it’s time for a battery replacement.
Pro Tip:
Keep a spare CR2032 battery in your glove box or toolbox. It’s an inexpensive item that can save you a lot of trouble if your fob suddenly stops working.
