Kwikset 780 Deadbolt Review – Grade 2 Quality for Locksmiths and Contractors

Today, we’re taking a closer look at the Kwikset 780 deadbolt, often classified as a Grade 2 security lock. For reference, the more common Kwikset 660 is typically considered Grade 3, although in some regions, you may even see them labeled as “high security” depending on local standards. The Kwikset 780 is a grade two deadbolt, which sits above the Kwikset 660, a Grade 3 lock. Interestingly, the rating of these locks can vary internationally, with some countries classifying them as high security. Let’s dive into the details of what makes the 780 a standout option.

This particular model came in a contractor box, not the retail blister packs you see at big-box hardware stores. Those retail versions may look nice on display, but this contractor or locksmith-grade version is a bit more robust right out of the box.

Kwikset 780 Grade 2 Deadbolt What’s in the Box?

Out of the box, the Kwikset 780 is designated with contractor-grade packaging, which contrasts with the common display packages found in big-box home hardware stores. This reflects its robust build and the reliable security it promises. Upon unpacking, one of the noticeable differences is its larger, more durable strike, highlighting the deadbolt’s promise of enhanced security.
As we unpack it for the first time, several things stand out:

  • Heavy-duty components: You’ll immediately notice a more substantial strike plate, which is essential for reinforcing the lock against forced entry.
  • Traditional pin tumbler: This is not a SmartKey lock. It’s a standard rekeyable cylinder that requires a pin kit—great news for locksmiths who prefer to work with traditional pinning techniques.
  • Thicker bolt: The bolt is more solid than what you’ll find on the 660 series, offering better durability.
  • Large security strike plate: It comes with a solid metal strike and 4 long 3-inch screws—great for anchoring the strike directly into the door frame.

Features and Components

The Kwikset 780 deadbolt presents several noteworthy attributes:

  • Heavy-Duty Strikes: Compared to other models, the 780’s strike is exceptionally sturdy, promising enhanced door frame protection.
  • Traditional Lock: Unlike smart locks, the 780 requires a pin kit for re-keying, appealing to those who appreciate traditional security mechanisms.
  • Screws and Installation: Accompanied by four three-inch screws, the deadbolt offers a secure fit into the door frame. While I prefer the extra protection of Don Jo door reinforcements, the included screws ensure a solid installation straight out of the box.
  • Convenient Key Features: The package includes a notch key designed for core removal. This allows for re-keying without disassembling the lock entirely, a relief for those who prefer less complicated maintenance.

A unique feature of this model is a specially notched key designed to remove the cylinder without disassembling the lock. A small detail, but one that can save you time on service calls.

Final Thoughts

Out of the box, the Kwikset 780 delivers solid build quality and features that make it a better option than many standard-grade locks. While I still prefer upgrading to a Don-Jo wrap plate or reinforcement plate for added security, the included hardware is quite decent for a factory package.

Conclusion and Invitation

In conclusion, the Kwikset 780 Grade 2 Deadbolt presents as a strong contender for enhancing home security. With its robust construction and features tailored for ease of use and installation, it’s a reliable choice for homeowners looking for peace of mind.
