Kwikset 780 Grade 2 Deadbolt Review Part 1

If you’re in the market for a Kwikset deadbolt, you’ve likely come across the Kwikset 780 and Kwikset 660 models. Today, we’re taking a closer look at the Kwikset 780, which is rated as a Grade 2 lock, offering better durability and security than the Kwikset 660, which is classified as Grade 3. However, in some countries, even the 660 gets marketed as a high-security lock, so let’s break it down and see what makes the Kwikset 780 stand out.
Kwikset 780 vs. Kwikset 660: What’s the Difference?
The Kwikset 780 is a contractor-grade deadbolt, meaning it’s built for professional locksmiths and contractors rather than just the general retail market. You’ll often see similar locks sold in big-box hardware stores, but they come in flashy display packages designed for DIY customers.
Right out of the box, here’s what you’ll notice:
- Heavier-duty construction than the 660.
- A more robust bolt.
- Larger, reinforced strike plate.
- Longer 3-inch screws for securing into the door frame.
Traditional Rekeyable Cylinder – No SmartKey
One standout feature of this Kwikset 780 is that it is NOT a SmartKey lock. Instead, it has a traditional pin and tumbler mechanism, meaning locksmiths can easily rekey it using a pin kit. Many locksmiths and security professionals prefer this system because SmartKey locks can have vulnerabilities when it comes to bypassing and forced entry.
Another useful feature? Kwikset includes a special key with a notch that allows you to remove the lock core without taking the entire lock apart. This is a great time-saving feature, especially for professionals doing multiple rekeys.
Enhanced Security with a Stronger Strike Plate & Screws
The Kwikset 780 comes with a reinforced strike plate and four 3-inch screws to secure it deep into the door frame. While this is a step up from the Kwikset 660, I always recommend reinforcing the door with a Don-Jo wrap or other aftermarket door reinforcement products for even better security.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for an affordable but solid Grade 2 deadbolt, the Kwikset 780 is a great choice. It offers better durability than the Kwikset 660, a traditional rekeyable cylinder, and stronger hardware right out of the box.
