Kwikset & Weiser SmartCode Commercial Grade Lever Lock Review – What You Need to Know

At Mr. Locksmith, we see all types of locks—from high-security commercial systems to basic residential setups. One of the more common electronic locks we encounter is the Kwikset SmartCode Commercial Grade Lever Lock, also sold under the Weiser SmartCode label. Same lock, different branding.
But is it really commercial grade? That’s debatable. Let’s break down the features, installation process, and what you need to know about this popular electronic deadbolt.
Is It Truly Commercial Grade?
While the packaging claims this lock is “certified Grade 2” and “tested to 500,000 cycles,” it feels more like a residential-grade product. The components—especially the internals—are fairly plasticky, and durability in high-traffic areas is questionable.
We’ve seen these locks fail under heavy use, particularly the latch mechanism. One of the toughest lockouts we’ve faced was with this exact model. The key turned, the keypad responded—but the latch had failed internally, rendering all entry methods useless. If the latch fails, it doesn’t matter if you have the key, try picking it, or even use an under-the-door tool—the door simply won’t open.
SmartKey Technology – Easy Rekeying, Questionable Security
Kwikset’s SmartKey system is a mixed bag. It allows for incredibly easy rekeying—great for property managers and landlords. Just insert the current key, use the SmartKey tool, insert a new key, and it’s done. But in terms of security, SmartKey cylinders have their limitations and vulnerabilities, especially when compared to traditional pin-and-tumbler systems.
Installation & Setup
Installation is straightforward:
-
Adjustable latch (2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″)
-
9V battery-powered (included)
-
Programming via keypad
-
Keyed override with Kwikset keyway
Key setup is intuitive. Add a user code by pressing the program button, then enter a code like 8790, press the lock symbol, and you’re good to go. It has basic security features like an auto-lock timer and a 3-strike lockout mode, which temporarily disables the keypad after three incorrect entries.
Pro Tip: Always use alkaline batteries. Rechargeable and lithium batteries don’t perform well in these locks and may not give proper low-battery warnings.
Bypass and Failure Points
We’ll go into more detail in future videos, but here are some quick notes:
-
Bypass techniques depend on how it’s installed and the condition of the latch.
-
The handle retention screw requires the key to be turned—a small but useful anti-tamper feature.
-
If you lose the key and need to reset or rekey the lock, it’s possible but may require special tools or knowledge.
Final Thoughts
This lock is easy to install and convenient for homes or light-use offices. But if you’re expecting high performance in a busy commercial environment, consider true commercial-grade alternatives with better internals and more secure cylinders. Source: Terry Whin-Yates Mr. Locksmith Linkedin
