The Dartmouth Commons is an approximately 120-hectare (300-acre) area of land set aside by the government in the late 18th century. Consequently, it was designated for settlers’ common use in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. Much of it is maintained by the Halifax Regional Municipality. Today, the most prominent area is called Leighton Dillman Park, which was named after a voluntary keeper of the garden.
Moreover, other areas of the Commons are used for various purposes, including baseball fields, the former Dartmouth City Hall, and the Dartmouth Regional Library. Afterward, the Dartmouth Heritage Museum took over, followed by the Zatzman Sportsplex. Additionally, Dartmouth High School, Bicentennial Jr. High School, and an elementary school called “Park School” (which has since been torn down) are located here, along with two burial grounds. Notably, the baseball fields are named for Arthur H. Merrick, who was a co-founder of minor baseball in Dartmouth in 1950. So, between the Dartmouth Sportsplex and Dartmouth High School, you will find the Bridge Transit Terminal, which is a major hub for Halifax Transit. Finally, the former Dartmouth Heritage Museum building has been demolished, and the area it occupied has been converted back into parkland.
