My Go-To Electronic Deadbolts

When it comes to electronic deadbolts, Schlage is one of my favorite brands. Over the years, I’ve installed countless Schlage locks, and while there are a few models I’m not crazy about, two stand out as rock-solid performers: the Schlage BE365 and the Schlage Sense (and its close relative, the Encode).

Both are reliable, durable, and trusted by homeowners, but they’re designed for slightly different needs. Let’s break down the key differences so you can decide which one is right for you.

Schlage BE365: The Plain Jane Workhorse

The Schlage BE365 is a no-nonsense, heavy-duty electronic deadbolt that just gets the job done.

• Battery: Runs on a 9V battery (not my favorite, but it lasts a long time).

• Keypad: Rubberized numeric keypad for easy entry.

• User Codes: Supports up to 19 user codes.

• Key Override: Includes a physical key override — a little tricky at first, but reliable once you learn it.

• Programming: All programming is done manually on the lock itself (no app or Wi-Fi support).

I like to call this lock the “Plain Jane Workhorse.” It doesn’t have any bells and whistles, but it’s dependable, sturdy, and perfect for someone who wants a simple standalone solution.

Schlage Sense (and Encode): Smart, Reliable & Full of Features

The Schlage Sense (and Encode series) takes things up a notch. This is a heavy-duty electronic deadbolt packed with smart features that make it incredibly convenient.

• Battery: Runs on 4 AA batteries (much easier to manage than a 9V).

• Key Override: Simple, user-friendly key override (no learning curve required).

• Smart Features: Works with the Schlage app (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capable).

• Remote Access: Control and monitor your lock from anywhere in the world with Wi-Fi.

• Auto-Lock: My favorite feature — you can set it to lock automatically after 30 seconds to 4 minutes. No more wondering, “Did I lock the door?”

• Family Sharing: Easily add family members and grant access remotely.

The app integration is seamless on both Android and iPhone. I love that I can unlock the door for someone standing outside my house even if I’m across the world. The auto-lock feature is also a game-changer for people (like me) who forget to lock doors regularly.

Schlage BE365 vs Schlage Sense: Which Should You Choose?

Both locks are excellent choices — it just depends on your needs.

• Choose the Schlage BE365 if:

  • You want a simple, reliable lock without smart features.

  • You don’t care about Wi-Fi, apps, or auto-locking.

  • You just want a workhorse deadbolt that’s tough and dependable.

• Choose the Schlage Sense (or Encode) if:

  • You want smart features like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and app control.

  • You love the idea of auto-locking for extra peace of mind.

  • You want the ability to unlock your door from anywhere.

  • You need something more user-friendly for multiple family members.
