At Mr. Locksmith, one of the more frustrating issues we run into regularly involves BMWs—and it’s usually a lockout emergency. Let’s break down what’s happening and how to avoid it.

The Problem Starts with the BMW Design

Most modern BMWs only have a physical keyhole on the driver’s door—and even that is hidden under a trim cap. There are no locks on the passenger door, and almost all entry and locking is done through the key fob or remote.

Now here’s where things get tricky:
The key fob battery is not replaceable. It uses a rechargeable battery that is soldered into the remote. Over time—typically around the 5-year mark—that battery dies. And when it does, your remote won’t unlock or start the vehicle anymore. You can’t just pop in a new battery—you need an entirely new remote, which costs $350+ for cutting and programming, and likely more depending on your model.

BMW Emergency Lock = Short-Term Use Only

BMW designed the door lock to be used only in emergencies. Most owners never use the key manually until their remote dies. So they remove the cover cap and start using the mechanical key…
But that lock is only rated for around 50 uses.

That’s right—the lock cylinder isn’t built for frequent use. So what happens? The lock fails. You’re locked out. And you still need a new remote anyway.

Common BMW Lockout Call

We often get calls like:

“My BMW door lock is sticking. The remote doesn’t work anymore, and I can’t get into the car.”

At that point, no amount of lubricant will fix the lock. It’s likely completely failed from overuse. And now you’ll need to:

  1. Get a replacement remote (and programming),

  2. Possibly replace the failed lock cylinder,

  3. Deal with a costly and inconvenient repair.

Prevent BMW Lockouts

Here’s how to stay ahead of this problem:

  • Plan to replace your remote every 5–6 years, before the internal battery fails.
  • Keep a backup remote if possible.

What About Lubricating Locks?

For most vehicles, a sticking lock can be fixed with Tri-Flow or a silicone-based WD-40 lubricant. We simply spray the lock, work the key in and out gently, and in 80% of cases, the lock works like new.

However, with BMWs, if the lock is stuck, lubricating usually won’t help—it’s mechanical failure, not friction.

Conclusion

BMWs are beautiful machines, but their lock systems are not designed for everyday key use. When your fob battery dies, the emergency key may only buy you a few uses before complete failure. Don’t wait until you’re locked out—maintain your remotes and understand the limits of the door lock system.

Stay tuned—I’ll be posting a future video showing exactly how this lock system works and what to expect during a BMW lockout service. Source: Terry Whin-Yates Mr. Locksmith Linkedin
